There is something special about Solan as compared to other hill stations of Himachal Pradesh. Solan is the largest municipal council of the State. It is the second populous city of Himachal Pradesh and its largest city. Solan derived its name from the Hindu goddess Sholini Devi which is a synonym of Devi Durga carrying �Trishul� (a weapon) in her hand. The city falls on the narrow gauge Kalka-Shimla railway line as the ninth station on way to Shimla. It is located at an elevation of 1,600 meters and is one of the highest railway stations of the world. The city is known for its mushroom and tomato cultivation. It is at proximity of some popular hill stations like Kasauli, Shimla and Kinnaur makes it an ideal halting point. The city has many luxurious hotels, recreational facilities and parks.
